The Come By Chance Bird Estuary is located where the freshwater from the Come By Chance river meets and mixes with the saltwater from Placentia Bay. The estuary provides wildlife with a nutrient rich environment and an abundant supply of invertebrates creating a productive feeding area for birds. Estuaries are considered the most important ecosystem on earth because they can support large numbers of organisms ranging from plants to birds. The estuary also extends to Gilberts Pond which is an excellent habitat for birds to nest and raise their young. Furthermore, the Come By Chance estuary is considered one of the top ten birding sites in Newfoundland.

Come By Chance and Department of natural resources wildlife division, through Eastern Habitat Joint Venture have become partners to conserve wildlife habitats within the towns municipal boundary. In a municipal stewardship agreement signed to implement a habitat management plan developed to assist the municipality to protect and conserve wetland habitats. This area is designated as a management unit to ensure future activities will not degrade these habitats.
