Recently the Town of Come By Chance received a ‘New Horizon’ grant that funded the startup costs of the “50 plus club”. This grant allowed the town to create this group which brings together the exchange of ideas between the young generation of today, with the older generation of yesterday. The concept is to exchange ideas between the two generations that at times do not necessarily understand each other.
Our youth teach seniors how to use technology, such as the computer (to do things such as emailing loved ones and use online banking) and interactive video games (such as Nintendo Wii, where seniors can socialize and have a workout at the same time). The older generation teach skills that may otherwise be forgotten such as fly tying, knitting, making preserves, traditional crafts, quilting, rope splicing and knotting, just to name a few. This club has become very popular within the town and has opened up the lines of communication between the generations, letting both understand one another.
Through funding from the Council, the 50 plus group has also enjoyed some recreational trips to varies areas of the province. The 50+ club has enjoyed two such trips thus far including an overnight stay at Woody Island, and lunch and a show in Trinity. We hope to plan more such trips in the future as well.
