Thanks for remembering Pte. Alexander Gilbert
LETTER TO THE EDITOR
It is with great appreciation and satisfaction that I write this letter to your
paper on behalf of the Gilbert family. We have always recognized Uncle Sandy as our
family hero. The Packet, The Telegram and the Town of Come By Chance went far beyond
our expectations to pay tribute to him ("Remembering Private Gilbert," Nov. 8
Telegram).
Come By Chance started showing an interest in gathering information about Pte.
Alexander Gilbert and having his war monument relocated to a more accessible
location in the year 2000.
Recently, under the leadership of Mayor Joan Cleary and town manager Brenda
Mulrooney, the town was finally successful in gathering information, preparing a
history board and establishing a permanent site for the monument. Sincere thanks
to them both. Also, thanks to Ralph Slade who made the trip across the gut to bring
back the monument and to Eddie Howlett and the staff at Muir's Marble Works for the
professional restoration and installation of the monument on its new site next to
the Anglican/United Church in Come By Chance.
Thanks to The Packet and The Telegram for publishing a well-written and
well-presented story by editor Barbara Dean-Simmons and photographer Gavin Simms.
This enabled the public to learn of the great sacrifice that Alexander Gilbert made
for king and country.
Many thanks to all the participants in the re-dedication service held on Nov. 11. My
family is honoured that so many helped to make this past Remembrance Day a very
special one for the Gilbert family.
It is people with big hearts and wonderful ideas that make small places and
forgotten stories remembered.
